Savvy opened the motel room door with the widest grin on her face. Her gift bag dangled from one hand as she spun and waved at Shabu, waiting for him to pull off before she strolled backward into the room on cloud nine. Her day started out rocky, but had taken a positive turn. Savvy didn’t care if she did nothing else because Shabu had more than made up for everyone else’s absence. She spun around to toss her bookbag aside before flicking on the light, and her hand slapped over her heart as she jumped back with wide eyes.

“Surprise!” Michi and Jessica sang, blowing on childish horns from the dollar store as they balanced cheap paper hats on their head with one hand.

Savvy blinked through her budding tears, peering at the table they’d pulled into the center of the room to place cupcakes, a liquor bottle, and two gift bags onto. The number one and eight balloons were each tied to a chair on either side of the table, and Savvy wanted to breakdown at the gesture.

“I know you didn’t think I’d let your birthday slip by without celebrating,” Michi said with a reassuring smile. “You’re legal, bitch. This is a big fucking deal.”

“You’re a big girl, Savvy!” Jessica sang, pulling Savvy into a hug as she laughed.

“I cannot believe y’all did this. I really thought you forgot about me, Michi.”

“Never that. Mad or not, it’s always me and you, lil’ cuz.”

Michi held out her hand, and Savvy beamed while slapping hers against it twice before they bumped fists. She placed her gift from Shabu onto the table and then gave her cousin the biggest hug before peeping into one of the medium-sized glittered bags.

“What is this?” she quizzed, tossing the excess tissue paper onto the floor before digging inside. Her fingers brushed against a scaly material, and she squealed before removing the black sequin dress with thin straps and a cowl neckline that would enhance her perky breasts. “This is so pretty!”

“It is?” Michi asked, her freshly threaded brow hiking at her cousin’s elation. “I thought I’d have to fight your ass into it.”

“No. I only turn eighteen once, right? I might as well look good doing it.”

“That’s what I’m talking about! Now, you’re getting it,” Jessica commended, passing her the gift she’d purchased.

Savvy reached into the bag, knowing a pair of matching heels hid inside the instant her fingers hit the cardboard box. She raced to the bed and kicked off her sneakers before removing the lid—placing one of the strappy heels on the floor to slide her foot into. She felt like Cinderella as she twisted her foot from one side to another in examination. Michi knew her size, so it didn’t surprise her they fit to perfection.

Shabu popped into her mind, and she grinned as her face flushed at the thought of sending him a few attachments. Savvy had to admit that their earlier conversation made her want to look the part, but only for him.
